ANIME DI CARTA
Drama| 15m | 2022
The film follows Alice, an Anglo-Sicilian woman living with her loving partner in England. Navigating a country she doesn’t truly feel a part of, Alice grows isolated and nostalgic of Sicily - where she was raised by her grandmother in her youth.
An unforeseen pregnancy shakes her day-to-day life. Alice cultivates a feeling of inadequacy - a product of generational trauma - and doesn’t feel ready to have a baby. She quickly realises that in order to begin to create a family, she needs to confront her own. Alice impulsively decides to visit her estranged mother Elena and reconnect with her after years apart.
At first, bitterness and hurt get in the way and the two women argue - having become strangers to one another. However, Alice soon finds a stack of old letters her mother wrote when she was her age and pregnant, slowly revealing how similar the two women actually are, drawing a parallel between their experiences.
